What is Boolean search in recruitment?

Boolean search is an advanced candidate search method that helps you filter your ATS database using structured keywords.

Instead of relying on basic keyword search, you combine terms using simple operators:

AND → must include both terms
OR → include either term
NOT → exclude a term
"Quotes" → search for an exact phrase
Brackets () → group related conditions

This gives you full control over your candidate search results inside your recruitment software.

Example:

"software engineer" AND (React OR Angular) NOT intern

This will show candidates who:

• Have the exact title "software engineer"
• Work with React or Angular
• Are not interns

Boolean search: How-to guide

1. Open Boolean search

Go to your Candidates view and click into the Boolean search bar.

You’ll see a dedicated search window where you can enter your Boolean string and choose what data to search through.

2. Enter your search string

Type your keywords and combine them using AND, OR, and NOT.

Use quotation marks for exact job titles
Use brackets to group related terms when needed.

Example:
("account executive" OR "sales manager") AND SaaS NOT internship

This allows you to control exactly which candidates appear in your results.

3. Choose what to search

Select where you want the system to search:

  • Candidates

  • Notes

  • Documents

  • Tasks

If you want to search inside CVs or recruiter comments, make sure those options are selected.

4. Run and refine

Click Search to generate your filtered candidate list instantly.

If your results are too broad, add more AND conditions.
If they’re too narrow, use OR to expand your search.

From there, you can move candidates directly into your recruitment pipeline.
